ʻEkolu Mea Nui is dedicated to addressing the overrepresentation of Native Hawaiians in Hawaiʻi’s carceral system, empowering those directly impacted by incarceration, particularly youth and families, to be leaders in the movement for transformative change. They advocate for the eradication of youth prisons, recognizing that there are better, community-based alternatives that prioritize healing and rehabilitation. Through mentorship, leadership development, and community engagement, the hui aims to prevent intergenerational incarceration and break the cycle of harm within Hawaiʻi communities. Grounded in Native Hawaiian cultural values and practices, they center indigenous wisdom and resilience in their approach to justice reform, creating pathways to success and well-being for all residents, and ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to a better Hawaiʻi.
